本书由五个单元内容组成：第一单元是化学基础知识；第二单元是化工基本原理；第三单元是化学工业与技术；第四单元是相关知识；第五单元是化工产品与质量检验。每单元均由4组(第五单元为2组)课文与阅读材料(共38篇文章)构成。每组课文、阅读材料后均附有生词、词组与术语释义以及课文注释、阅读材料脚注，并配置相应的练习题，包括中英文短语互译、18篇拓宽专业内容且不乏趣味性的短文翻译等。书后给出了全部习题答案及短文翻译参考文本。
