SPeed．SPread，StimUlatiOn，Speculation是阅读教学的四个层次、四种境界，也是本套教材名称的来历。本册教材的关键词是Speed——阅读速度。作为入门阶段的教材，本册教材一改众多阅读教材以量取胜、长篇大作的模式，特意选了一些短小精悍的文章，每篇400～600词，题材以日常生活场景为主，让学生能比较容易地度过从中学生到英语专业本科生的过渡期，较为轻松地获得成就感。本册教材共12单元，每单元3篇主课文，配上相应的内容理解练习及词汇练习；设有阅读技巧专题，主要集中在词语理解技巧方面，每单元一个要点，全册书自成体系；由于主课文阅读量偏少，为体现“speed”的理念，设计了一个课内外均可用的阅读练习板块，难度相当于应用英语A级(3A)；还有几个趣味性的附加练习项目，让学生轻松愉快地扩大词汇量，提高语言运用能力。
