Speed，SPread，Stimulation，Speculation是阅读教学的四个层次，四种境界，这也是本套教材名称的来历。本册教材关键词是Speculation——思考与思维。本册教材共1 0单元，生词量约500个。本册教材拟通过介绍社会科学与自然科学各个领域的动向与学术成果，激发学生的创造性思维以及对科学研究的向往与热情。本册的内容板块模式仍为每单元三组主课文，但第三组含三篇较短小的文章，第一、二组各一篇文章，篇幅达1500词以上，每篇课文后都有相关的练习； 同样含有阅读技巧，本册技巧主要针对英语专业四级考试阅读练习的综合答题技巧；也有一组实战型阅读练习，程度相当于或略高于英语专业4级；此外，还有一个趣味性、益智型练习板块。
